Traveling raccoon con artist, RJ, arrives outside a human city in the Midwest in woods, excited about the thoughts that hungry animals may come near. What he finds, however, is an Amish-like community which is deathly scared of humans, after their leader, Vern the tortoise (Shandling), had an encounter with boys that terrifies him. Encouraged by RJ, however, the animals slowly venture over the hedge that separates them from the all new development of suburban that appeared in the winter when they were sleeping, and RJ shows them is a total new world where humans leave food in big canisters and tin cans full of fish , ripe for the taking. As they get closer and closer to humans, however, their comfortable lives in the woods appear to be threatened…
